Traditions... Portuguese Embroidery

We all know that Portugal is famous worldwide for its traditional embroidery… The richness and variety of our stitches are admirable and in such a small country it’s amazing how within the distance of 100 km we'll find so many different kinds of typical embroidery.

But Portuguese people are so used to beautiful stitches that many times forget to properly appreciate the treasures they are surrounded by. I believe that in almost every home there is a piece of embroidery or, at least, in every mothers’ and grandmothers’ homes… Every stitch tells a family story and Portuguese embroidery tells the history of our country…

I do believe Portugal is a living museum of embroidery and if you live here or if you know our country you surely understand what I’m talking about…

I leave you with some photos taken at the Antiques and Flea Street Market in Estremoz… But it could have been anywhere in Portugal… Portuguese embroidery is not only kept in our drawers, very often you can find it under the sunshine where everyone can enjoy it!
